Alcohol rehab
Alcohol is the common term for ethyl alcohol. It is made by the fermentation of fruits, vegetables or grains by yeasts which modify the carbohydrates (sugars) of these plants to ethyl alcohol. Alcoholic beverages consist mainly of different strength mixtures of water and ethyl alcohol. . It is one of the most commonly consumed and abused substances.
Alcohol depresses regions of the central nervous system - it affects some of our brain functions by slowing them down. Numerous areas of the central nervous system are depressed by alcohol, with different consequences. For instance, when the brain's speech centers are affected, this causes slurred speech; when the vision centers are affected this causes distorted vision and when the co-ordination centers are affected, this causes a loss of balance and limb control.
The serious depressant effect of alcohol lasts only a few hours after consumption. However, alcohol causes a weaker agitation (or irritation) of the nervous system that lasts way longer. This irritation of the nervous system causes the "morning after" hangover and shakiness.
This effect often leads heavy evening drinkers to drink again the next morning, as the (extremely uncomfortable) agitation may temporarily be overcome by drinking more. This vicious circle can play a wide role in alcoholic drinking patterns.
